For students with learning disabilities or differences (LDs), deciding which college entrance exam – the SAT or the ACT – is the best fit for their needs can be extra challenging as they must navigate additional considerations, like applying to accommodations. While one test isn’t preferable over the other for every LD – everyone is an individual – there are some elements that make one test for preferable over another depending on students’ needs and available accommodations. At, we advise students to first take a full-length diagnostic test of both the SAT and ACT. This is an inclusive and customized process since we evaluate the student’s individual needs based on their performance on the practice tests. It is important for all students, particularly those who have an LD, to take the exams under the timed testing conditions in order to simulate a realistic testing experience to produce accurate baseline scores. From these baseline scores we are able to evaluate how and where the student’s individual needs may be working for or against them during the examination. Applying for Accommodations: Will This Decide What Test is right for Me? One aspect that needs to be considered when choosing which test is best for a student to take is the accommodations process for both the SAT and ACT. The unique difference between applying for accommodations with the SAT and ACT is that the ACT requires you to have been professionally diagnosed and for the student to currently be receiving accommodations in your school. The trick with the ACT is that you need to register for a test date in order to apply for accommodations, which is why it is important to register for your test early in order to be eligible to apply for accommodations. For SAT accommodations, you can apply as early as your entrance into high school. Hypothetically, on your first day of high school you can apply to be approved. This approval is non-binding, so even if you decide not to take the SAT and go for the ACT, you will at least have the accommodations in place if you change your mind or need to take an SAT Subject Test for college admission. The SAT does have a deadline for accommodations, unlike the ACT, and they need to be submitted 7 weeks in advance of the registered exam. However, we encourage our students to apply for accommodations 8-12 weeks in advance, in the case that their accommodations have not been approved and the family would like to request an appeal. Timing on the ACT vs. SAT Depending on your LD, processing materials in a certain time frame may be more or less challenging. If a student with ADHD has been granted 50% extended time, they can choose to take the exam at their school (during the school day). Since the student would not be testing in a large testing center with other students and would be taking the exam in a familiar setting could reduce distractions. Please note: any student granted 50% extended time is granted the option of choosing their testing center, this is not limited to students with ADHD. Do We Really Have Bugs Living Our Your Eyelashes

You probably dont think of your face as a homestead for bugs, but its true. Human skin is literally crawling with microscopic insects called mites and these critters have a fondness for hair follicles, especially the ones that belong to eyelashes and nostril hair. Normally, these super-tiny critters dont cause problems for their human hosts but in rare cases, they can cause eye infections.   Mite History We’ve known about face mites since the early 1840s, thanks to their near-simultaneous discovery by two German scientists. In 1841, Frederick Henle found tiny parasites living in earwax but he wasn’t sure how to classify them within the animal kingdom. He said as much in a letter to German physician Gustav Simon, who discovered the same parasites year later while studying facial pimples.  Demodex folliculorum had arrived. More than a century later in 1963, a Russian scientist named L. Kh. Akbulatova noticed that some face mites were a bit smaller than the others. He considered the shorter mites a subspecies and referred to them as Demodex brevis. Subsequent study determined that the mite was actually a distinct species, with a unique morphology that differentiated it from the larger Demodex folliculorum. All About Mites There are more than 60 species of parasitic mite, but only two,  Demodex folliculorum  and  Demodex brevis, like to  live on human beings. Both can be found on the face, as well as the chest, back, groin, and buttocks. The  Demodex brevis, sometimes called the face mite, prefers to live near  sebaceous glands, which produce oil the keep the skin and hair moist. (These glands also cause pimples and acne when they become clogged or infected.) The eyelash mite,  Demodex folliculorum, prefers living on the hair follicle itself.   Research shows that the older you are, the more face mites you have tucked away in your facial follicles. Newborn babies are mite-free, but by age 60, virtually all humans are infested with face mites.  Face mites are believed to spread from person to person via close contact and a healthy human adult is colonized by 1,000 to 2,000 follicle mites at any given time, without ill effects. Facial mites have eight stubby legs and  long, thin heads and bodies that allow them to move in and out of narrow hair follicles with ease. Face mites are tiny, measuring a mere fraction of a millimeter long. They spend their lives head-down in the follicle, gripping onto the hair or lash tightly with their feet.   Follicle mites (Demodex folliculorum) typically live in groups, with a few mites sharing a follicle. The smaller face mites (Demodex brevis) seem to be loners and generally only one will occupy a given follicle. Both species feed on the secretions of oil glands and  Demodex folliculorum  is thought to feed on dead skin cells as well. Occasionally, a face mite may need a change of scenery. Face mites are photophobic, so they wait until the sun goes down and the lights are off before backing slowly out of their follicle and  making the arduous journey  (moving at a rate of about one centimeter per hour) to a new follicle.   There are still some things that researchers dont know about facial mites, especially when it comes to their reproductive lives. Scientists believe that facial mites may only lay one egg at a time because each egg can be up to half the size of its parent. The female deposits her eggs inside the hair follicle and they hatch in about three days. Within the span of a week, the mite progresses through its nymphal stages and reaches adulthood. Mites live about 14 days. Health Issues The link between facial mites and health problems is not well understood, however, scientists say they do not normally pose any issues for people. The most common disorder, called demodicosis, is caused by an overabundance of mites on the skin and hair follicles. Symptoms include itchy, red, or burning eyes; inflammation around the eyelid; and crusty discharge around the eye. Seek medical treatment if you have any of these symptoms, which can also indicate other health issues besides mites. In some instances, your doctor may recommend a prescription or over-the-counter antibiotic treatment. Some people also recommend cleaning the eyelashes with tea tree or lavender oil and washing the face with baby shampoo to remove mites. You may also want to consider discontinuing the use of cosmetics—especially mascara and eyeliner—until your skin is clear.   People suffering from rosacea and dermatitis tend to have a much higher number of face mites on their skin than persons with clear skin. However, scientists say theres no clear correlation. The mites may cause the skin to break out, or the infection may attract abnormally large mite populations. Large face mite populations have also been found on people suffering from other  dermatological disorders, such as alopecia (hair loss),  madarosis (loss of eyebrows), and infections of hair and oil glands on the head and face. However later in the novel we see that whilst she does not approve of how class conscious Sir Walter is, Austen is still a woman of her time and we see that she is class conscious, through Anne’s reactions, but not to the degree that Sir Walter is. In the same chapter we also find out more about Mr Elliot’s past relationship with the Elliot family, in particular with Elizabeth and Sir Walter, to an extent. We see that Mr Elliot has disappointed her, â€Å"the heir presumptive †¦ had disappointed her† even though she had â€Å"found him extremely agreeable†. However instead of marrying Elizabeth, Mr Elliot sought independence and married â€Å"a rich woman of inferior birth.† This leads to all acquaintance between the ceasing as Mr Elliot had slighted Sir Walter and had â€Å"shewn himself as unsolicitous of being longer noticed by the family†. The next time we meet Mr Elliot is in the last chapter of Book One, where Anne and the Musgroves are in Lyme with Captain Wentworth. This chapter is where Mr Elliot sees Anne for the first time and where he is first seen as a potential rival for Anne’s attention and affection, â€Å"Anne’s face caught his eye, and he looked at her with a degree of earnest admiration†. Wentworth in turn notices how Mr Elliot looks at Anne and even he can â€Å"see something like Anne Elliot again†. Mr Elliot paying attention to Anne shows that se is once again in â€Å"bloom†. In this chapter through Anne and the others in Lyme that Mr Elliot is in mourning, therefore his wife has only died relatively recently. When the ‘mystery gentleman’ is identified as Mr Elliot by the party in Lyme, we see that Austen highlights Mary’s class snobbery. We next see Mr Elliot in Chapter Three of Book Two, however the reaction to him is much more positive than it was in the first book. We see that despite his previous grievances against them Elizabeth and Sir Walter readily forgive Mr Elliot and are even happy to renew their acquaintance. In this chapter we see that the relationship between Mr Elliot and Anne improves and we see that he is clearly attracted to her. This is where the possibility of Mr Elliot standing as a rival against Wentworth for Anne’s affections becomes a reality. In the next chapter Austen uses Mr Elliot to show how fickle Lady Russell is. We see here that she feels that he could not be â€Å"a more agreeable or estimable man† and that â€Å"Everything united in him; good understanding, correct opinions, knowledge of the world, and a warm heart†. This directly contrast her feeling in Chapter Fourteen where she states that â€Å"he is a man whom [she has] no wish to see† and that he had â€Å"left a very strong impression in his disfavour† with her when he declined to be â€Å"on cordial terms with the head of his family†. Here we also see that Mr Elliot is not as class conscious as Sir Walter and Elizabeth but he is more class conscious than Anne. In the next chapters Mr Elliot becomes even more of an obstacle in Anne and Wentworth’s relationship. We see what Anne’s opinion of him is; she thinks that whilst â€Å"Mr Elliot is an exceedingly agreeable man† he was â€Å"too generally agreeable†. This shows how shrewd Anne is, compared with the rest of her family and her close friends. Austen uses Mr Elliot more in the second half of the novel in order to distract Anne’s attention away from Wentworth. This can be seen in Chapter Twenty during the concert held for the benefit of a person patronised by Lady Dalrymple. We see that Mr Elliot successfully monopolises a lot of Anne’s time, which in turn makes Wentworth jealous. Wentworth now knows that he is still in love with Anne due to the attention she is receiving from Mr Elliot, but again due to the obstacle Mr Elliot presents he can not make his feelings known to Anne. However after Mrs Smith unmasks Mr Elliot for Anne after the concert, we see him for who he truly is. Here Wentworth and Mr Elliot can be compared and you can clearly see who the better person is out of the two. Wentworth is everything that Mr Elliot is not, for example Wentworth is open and spontaneous whereas Mr Elliot is polished and conceals his emotions. Another example where the two can be compared is when Wentworth helps Mrs Smith when Mr Elliot deserted her in her time of need after the death of her husband. Here Austen clearly wants to show the differences between the two characters, and it highlights how Wentworth is from a lower class and has made his own fortune through hard work and how Mr Elliot stands to inherit his fortune whilst not even being half the man Wentworth is. In conclusion it could be said that Mr Elliot is of vital significance to the novel and that Austen uses him to further the plot, especially between Anne and Wentworth. He is used to show the characters and the readers that even though he is from the upper classes it does not mean that he is better than any one else.
